Rope Access Training Scotland

There are lots of career opportunities within the rope access industry and its a really rewarding career both mentally and financially. However, for those looking to kick start their career, getting to grips with the different rope access training and qualifications required can often be overwhelming.

Rope access is a highly skilled job that requires expert training, skills, and knowledge to carry out manoeuvres and rescue procedures in line with stringent industry and safety requirements. With this in mind, training and qualifications are essential before you can begin your career as a fully-fledged rope access technician.

And your journey will begin by completing your Rope Access Level 1 Training, which covers a range of rope access manoeuvres, the fundamental rescue procedures, the inspection of rigging equipment and of course, current legislation.

Certification Levels

Rope access training courses have three certification levels: rope access level 1, rope access level 2, and rope access level 3.

All courses are devised and assessed by the Industrial Rope Access Trade Association (IRATA), which is the international governing body within the rope access industry. The IRATA two-rope, fail to safe method of working has solved many access problems around the world, safely. However before you embark on any of the industrial rope access courses, it’s important that you familiarise yourself with the course content, especially if you’re just starting out.

Here’s our guide to everything you need to know about rope access level 1 training.

What will you be assessed on during your Rope Access Level 1?

At level 1, you will be tested on the material you have covered during the IRATA level 1 assessment. The rope access level 1 course covers:

• Safe working systems

• Understanding of how IRATA works

• Being able to carry out an assessment of risk

• Rope system rigging

• Basic rescues

• Providing correct care

• Fitting of equipment safely and effectively

• Adopting safe practices

• Anchor systems

• Personal protective equipment and how to use it effectively

• Manoeuvres, including descent, ascent, rope changing, work seats, deviation, edge transitions and rope protection

• Work position systems and fall arrest

Rope access training courses take place usually over the course of five days. With this in mind, you can expect the training to be intensive, with a lot of content to cover during a short space of time. As a result, many participants find it incredibly helpful to clue up on the basics before beginning their course, its also very physical and expect your arms to be hanging on by a thread at the end!
